SRINAGAR MARCH 23:-Junaid Azim Mattu former Mayor Srinagar Municipal Corporation has expressed strong disappointment over remarks made by Mushtaq Ahmad Veeri regarding the ongoing situation in Iran, calling the stance “morally and religiously troubling.”
In a detailed post on X, Mattu said that remaining silent on the alleged killing of innocent people contradicts both human ethics and Islamic teachings. He argued that Veeri’s suggestion—that he would not be questioned for his silence—was “fundamentally wrong” and inconsistent with the principles outlined in the Holy Quran and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).
Citing verses from Surah An-Nisa (135) and Surah Al-Baqarah (283), Mattu emphasized that Islam commands believers to stand firmly for justice and not conceal the truth. He questioned whether “deliberate silence in the face of injustice” can ever be justified, especially by a religious scholar with influence.
Referring to Hadith literature, Mattu highlighted that speaking a word of truth against oppression is considered among the highest forms of struggle in Islam. He further pointed to the Prophet’s (ﷺ) life, including participation in Hilf al-Fudul, as an enduring example of standing with the oppressed regardless of differences.
Mattu also suggested that Veeri’s reluctance to comment on Iran might stem from ideological differences, cautioning that sectarian considerations should not override the obligation to uphold justice. He cited Surah Al-Ma’idah (8), urging fairness and restraint from bias.
While acknowledging Veeri’s past experiences, including detention, Mattu maintained that silence should not be presented as a principle in the face of what he described as “manifest injustice.”
Calling for clarity, Mattu urged Veeri to explain his position, particularly at a time when, he said, there is growing unity and solidarity among different sections of the Muslim community.
The remarks have sparked discussion on social media, with users debating the role of religious scholars in addressing global issues and the responsibility to speak against injustice.
