RAJOURI FEBRUARY 23:-The Indian Navy is set to significantly enhance its Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) capabilities with the commissioning of Anjadip, the third vessel of the eight-ship Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) project, on February 27.
According to the Ministry of Defence (MoD), the warship will be formally commissioned into the Eastern Naval Command at Chennai Port. The ceremony will be presided over by Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff.
The commissioning marks another milestone in India’s accelerated progress towards achieving ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ in defence production. The ASW-SWC project stands as a strong example of indigenous warship design and construction capabilities.
Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata, Anjadip is a state-of-the-art vessel designed specifically to address the challenges of littoral combat environments — the coastal and shallow waters that are vital to national security.
The ship is engineered as a dedicated “Dolphin Hunter,” specialising in the detection, tracking, and neutralisation of enemy submarines operating in coastal areas. It is equipped with advanced indigenous ASW weapons and sensor systems, including the Hull Mounted Sonar ‘Abhay’, Lightweight Torpedoes, and ASW Rockets.
Beyond its primary anti-submarine role, the agile and highly manoeuvrable warship is capable of undertaking coastal surveillance, Low-Intensity Maritime Operations (LIMO), and Search & Rescue missions.
Measuring 77 metres in length, the vessel features a high-speed Water-Jet Propulsion system, enabling it to achieve a top speed of 25 knots, ensuring rapid response and sustained operational capability.
Named after the historically significant island of Anjadip off the coast of Karwar, the induction of the vessel will significantly strengthen the Navy’s ability to safeguard India’s vast maritime interests and coastal approaches, including the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry region. The commissioning also marks another key step in transforming the Indian Navy into a formidable “Builder’s Navy.”
