SRINAGAR, JULY 02:-July 2 marks the anniversary of one of the most significant political developments in the history of Jammu and Kashmir. On this day in 1984, the government led by Dr. Farooq Abdullah was dismissed, paving the way for the formation of a new government headed by the late Khawaja Ghulam Mohammad Shah.

Political commentator Mohammad Yousuf Gilkar recalled that the then Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Jagmohan, dismissed the elected National Conference government and invited Khawaja Ghulam Mohammad Shah to form the government with the support of the Indian National Congress and a group of rebel National Conference legislators.

According to Gilkar, on his Facebook post the then Governor B.K. Nehru had reportedly opposed dismissing the elected government and was subsequently replaced by Jagmohan. He stated that shortly after assuming office, Jagmohan dismissed Dr. Farooq Abdullah’s government despite the latter’s demand for an opportunity to prove his majority on the floor of the Legislative Assembly.

The political shift was made possible after ten National Conference MLAs rebelled against Dr. Farooq Abdullah’s leadership and extended support to the Congress. Khawaja Ghulam Mohammad Shah, who was also the son-in-law of the late Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, subsequently formed a coalition government and inducted several senior Congress leaders along with the rebel National Conference legislators into his Council of Ministers.

The dismissal of the Farooq Abdullah government and the installation of the G.M. Shah-led administration continue to be regarded as one of the most consequential and debated episodes in Jammu and Kashmir’s political history. Historians and political analysts have offered differing interpretations of the constitutional and political circumstances surrounding the events, which remain a subject of discussion more than four decades later.
