RAJOURI, JUNE 09:- The constitution of an internal inquiry committee by Government Medical College (GMC) Rajouri to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of Nusrat Jahan has sparked widespread public concern, with residents, social activists and members of civil society demanding an impartial magistrate-level probe into the matter.
Many citizens have termed the internal inquiry an “eye wash,” arguing that an investigation conducted by officials of the same institution may not inspire public confidence or ensure accountability. They maintain that the seriousness of the allegations warrants an independent and transparent inquiry by a magistrate or another competent authority outside the GMC administration.
Nusrat Jahan, a resident of Rajouri, reportedly died after receiving treatment at GMC Rajouri, triggering protests by her family members and relatives. The bereaved family has alleged medical negligence and demanded strict action against all those found responsible.
Public voices across the district have questioned how a fair and impartial investigation can be conducted by the same institution whose functioning is under scrutiny. Citizens have urged the Jammu and Kashmir administration to intervene and order a magistrate probe to ascertain the facts and ensure justice for the deceased and her family.
Social activists have also emphasized that an independent investigation would help restore public trust in the healthcare system and remove any doubts regarding the credibility of the findings.
Meanwhile, GMC Rajouri has constituted an internal committee to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident and has suspended two nursing staff members pending inquiry. However, the demand for a separate and impartial investigation continues to gain momentum, with many residents insisting that only an independent probe can establish accountability and address public concerns.
Several members of the public have questioned the scope of the action taken by the GMC administration. They have alleged that disciplinary measures have so far been initiated only against nursing staff, while no action has been announced against the doctors who allegedly prescribed the medicines and injections administered to the deceased patient. Critics argue that nurses administer treatment on the prescription and advice of attending doctors, and therefore the role of all medical personnel involved should be examined impartially.
Some citizens have further alleged that the inquiry process appears selective and incomplete, raising concerns that the conduct of doctors on duty during Nusrat Jahan’s treatment may not be receiving the same level of scrutiny. These allegations have intensified public demands for a magistrate-level probe to ensure transparency, accountability and public confidence in the investigation.
As public pressure mounts, residents are calling upon the Jammu and Kashmir administration to order an independent inquiry so that all facts surrounding the death of Nusrat Jahan are thoroughly examined and responsibility, if any, is fixed without fear or favour.
