SRINAGAR, APRIL 05:- Political discourse in Jammu & Kashmir has intensified following fresh allegations against the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC) regarding its handling of the region’s hydroelectric power resources.
In a recent Facebook post, Iltija Mufti criticized the party, accusing it of maintaining “inconsistent and duplicitous policies” over the years, particularly in relation to power projects.
Referring to decisions taken during the tenure of Farooq Abdullah in 1996, Mufti alleged that eight hydroelectric projects were transferred to the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation at significantly low valuations. She claimed that the move has had long-term consequences, with Jammu & Kashmir continuing to purchase electricity generated from its own resources at high costs.
The post further alleged that in his current term, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has approved the transfer of two additional power projects to NHPC, sparking criticism from opposition leaders.
Mufti also highlighted what she described as a contradiction between the party’s election promises and its actions in government. According to her, the NC had pledged during elections to reclaim previously transferred projects but has instead facilitated further transfers.
These developments come at a time when many residents across Jammu & Kashmir are reportedly facing electricity shortages and rising power tariffs, adding to public concerns over energy management in the Union Territory.
No official response from the National Conference leadership was immediately available at the time of filing this report.
