RAJOURI MARCH 07:-Panic gripped the District Jail at Dhangri in Rajouri on Saturday evening after a violent clash reportedly broke out between inmates from Kashmir and local prisoners inside the jail premises.
The incident reportedly occurred around 7 pm and led to injuries to several inmates and security personnel.
Officials have not issued any formal statement regarding the incident so far, but sources said that police have registered a case and initiated an investigation.
According to sources associated with the jail, the altercation began over a minor issue during the time of Roza Iftar, which reportedly led to a heated argument between two inmates. The argument later took an ugly turn and escalated into a violent clash, with other inmates from both sides joining in.
Inmates allegedly exchanged punches and kicks, while some reportedly picked up bricks and sticks and hurled them at each other, creating chaos inside the jail.
Jail staff and police personnel deployed on duty tried to intervene and bring the situation under control. However, by the time the clash was contained, some miscreants had reportedly also thrown chilli powder on the security personnel, leaving many injured.
According to unconfirmed reports, the number of injured inmates and police/CRPF personnel could be in double digits. Security forces personnel who sustained injuries were shifted to the hospital for treatment, while a team of three doctors, along with an ambulance, rushed from the hospital to District Jail Dhangri to provide treatment to the injured inmates inside the jail.
Reports also indicate that some Kashmiri inmates attempted to damage jail infrastructure during the clash, including CCTV cameras, further escalating tensions inside the prison complex.
After receiving information about the incident, the Deputy Superintendent of Police (Headquarters), along with police personnel, rushed to the jail to assess the situation and ensure law and order.
Sources said the injured inmates were treated inside the jail premises and, according to sources, few may be shifted to the Associated Hospital Government Medical College (AHGMC) Rajouri for further treatment.
Five CRPF and police personnel have been treated at AHGMC for minor injuries.
Inmates lodged in District Jail Dhangri from the Kashmir Valley include those accused in militancy-related cases, including alleged terrorists or over-ground workers (OGWs). Meanwhile, most of the local inmates lodged in the jail are reportedly involved in cases related to drugs, criminal activities, or murder.
There are 253 inmates in the district jail at Dhangri, including 60 from Kashmir province, according to reports.
