RAJOURI OCT 13:-The Ministry of Home Affairs, Department of Jammu, Kashmir & Ladakh in a notification issued on Sunday said that President rule in Jammu and Kashmir has officially been revoked.
An order issued by the President of India which is published for general information read: “In exercise of powers conferred by section 73 of the Jammu & Kashmir Reorganisation Act 2019 (34 of 2019) read with articles 239 and 239A of the Constitution of India, the Order dated the 31st October 2019 in relation to the Union territory of Jammu & Kashmir shall stand revoked immediately before the appointment of the Chief Minister under section 54 of the Jammu & Kashmir Reorganisation Act,2019”.
Revocation of President rule follows the conclusion of Assembly elections & has cleared the path for the first in the region since 2014.
The President Rule was imposed in J&K on 19 June 2018 after the collapse of the coalition government formed by the People
Democratic Party (PDP) and the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP).
Later in a significant move the Central Government revoked J&K’s semi-autonomous status under Article 370 of the Indian Constitution, reclassifying it as a Union Territory.
After a gap of about 10 years the elections for 90 Assembly Constituencies were held in three faces in September and October respectively after the abrogation of Article 370.
The National Conference got 42 seats while its pre-poll alliance partner Congress got 6 seats.
BJP emerged as the second largest party with 29 seats while the PDP got 3 seats.
All eyes are now on the formation of a new elected government in J&K and the relations between Central and state governments.
