Statehood or Politics? Is Omar Abdullah Fighting Alone?

As Jammu and Kashmir prepares for the proposed Jantar Mantar protest in New Delhi, the debate over the restoration of statehood has once again taken centre stage. Beyond party politics, the issue raises a larger question: should the demand for statehood unite all political stakeholders, or has it become another point of political division?
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, along with National Conference legislators, is set to travel to the national capital to press for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood. The National Conference maintains that this is not merely a political demand but a constitutional and democratic right of the people, linked to the restoration of their full political identity and governance.

However, the response from other political parties has been far from unanimous. The People’s Democratic Party has decided to stay away from the protest, maintaining that the restoration of Article 370 should take precedence over the demand for statehood. This position has reignited the debate over whether statehood should be pursued first or whether both issues should be addressed simultaneously.

The Congress, too, appears to be sending mixed signals. Reports indicating uncertainty among some of its legislators regarding participation have created questions about the party’s approach to one of Jammu and Kashmir’s most significant political issues.

The differing strategies of political parties are not unusual in a democracy. Yet, when it comes to issues that affect the constitutional and administrative future of an entire region, many believe that a united political voice carries greater weight than fragmented campaigns.

Ultimately, the restoration of statehood is a matter that extends beyond electoral politics. Whether political parties choose to pursue it collectively or through separate political strategies remains their decision. What matters most is whether the aspirations of the people remain at the centre of the debate rather than becoming overshadowed by political differences.

The coming days will reveal whether the demand for statehood can become a common cause or whether it will continue to reflect the deep political divides within Jammu and Kashmir.
