Seven Undertrial Prisoners Recommended for Bail in Shopian UTRC Meeting

SHOPIAN APRIL 21:-The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Shopian on Tuesday convened a meeting of the Under Trial Review Committee (UTRC) at the District Court Complex to assess cases of undertrial prisoners and facilitate timely justice.

Held in line with the annual schedule of the Legal Services Authority J&K and guidelines issued by the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), the meeting focused on identifying eligible undertrial prisoners for release and strengthening the functioning of the UTRC mechanism.

The session was chaired by Principal District & Sessions Judge and Chairman DLSA Shopian, Mehmood Ahmad Chowdhary, and attended by senior officials from the civil administration, police, and jail authorities.

During the deliberations, the committee reviewed a list of shortlisted undertrial prisoners presented by the Secretary DLSA. After thorough examination, seven prisoners were found eligible and recommended for release on bail, subject to approval by the competent courts and completion of legal formalities, including surety bonds.

Among those present were ADDC Shopian Dr. Nasir Ahmad Lone, ASP Shopian Ramiz Rashid, Secretary DLSA Mudasar Farooq, Superintendent of Jails Pulwama Dr. Aejaz Ahmad, and Chief Legal Aid Defense Counsel Shopian Rafie Ahmad Ganie.

Officials reiterated the importance of regular UTRC meetings in reducing overcrowding in jails and ensuring that eligible prisoners are not deprived of their right to liberty due to procedural delays.
