PSA Against MLA Mehraj Malik Unjustifiable: MP Aga Ruhullah Mehdi

SRINAGAR SEPTEMBER 09:-Member of Parliament Aga Ruhullah Mehdi has strongly criticized the invocation of the Public Safety Act (PSA) against MLA Mehraj Malik, terming it “unjustifiable” and contrary to democratic principles.

In his X handle Mehdi argued that if an elected representative errs, he must be held accountable through the due process of law rather than preventive detention. “That is how accountability works in a democracy,” he said.

Highlighting the misuse of PSA in Jammu and Kashmir, Mehdi said the law, originally intended for exceptional cases of grave security threats, has repeatedly been used on vague and arbitrary grounds. He asserted that it has effectively become a tool to silence dissenting voices instead of safeguarding public security.

“The misuse of PSA erodes public trust in institutions and reduces a legal safeguard into an instrument of suppression,” the MP added.

While condemning MLA Mehraj Malik’s use of abusive language, Mehdi maintained that invoking PSA in this case amounts not to justice but to repression.

The statement underscores growing concerns about the erosion of democratic accountability and the continued misuse of PSA in Jammu & Kashmir.
