RAJOURI, MARCH 17:-In a significant crackdown on corruption, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Tuesday apprehended a Power Development Department (PDD) inspector in Rajouri while allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹30,000 from a complainant.
According to official sources, the accused official was caught red-handed during a well-planned trap operation conducted by the ACB following a complaint regarding the demand for illegal gratification. The arrest has once again brought the issue of corruption in public service departments into sharp focus.
It is pertinent to mention that several residents of Rajouri have long alleged that some PDD employees at the district headquarters have been demanding and collecting thousands of rupees for providing new electricity connections. Locals claim that poor consumers, left with no alternative, are often forced to pay these незаконal amounts to access basic services.
Moreover, serious allegations have also surfaced regarding the installation of smart meters. Residents allege that hefty sums are being demanded for installing these meters, and in cases where consumers fail to meet such demands, their smart meters are deliberately not installed. As a result, such consumers are reportedly burdened with inflated electricity bills charged on flat rates, often fixed arbitrarily.
The people of Rajouri have widely appreciated the action taken by the ACB, terming it a much-needed step to curb corruption and ensure accountability within the department. Many have urged the authorities to continue such strict action against erring officials to restore public trust and transparency in essential services.
The ACB has assured that further investigation into the matter is underway, and strict action will be taken against anyone found involved in corrupt practices.
