Omar Abdullah Slams Detention of AAP MLA Mehraj Malik Under PSA

SRINAGAR SEPTEMBER 09:-Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, has strongly criticized the detention of Aam Aadmi Party MLA Mehraj Malik under the Public Safety Act (PSA).

In a statement on X, Abdullah argued that there is no justification for Malik’s detention, asserting that he does not pose a threat to public safety. He described the PSA as a “discredited law” and said that using it against an elected representative is wrong.

Abdullah further warned that if an unelected government can misuse its powers to detain a people’s representative, it raises serious concerns about democracy in Jammu and Kashmir.

The central issue, he emphasized, is the misuse of preventive detention laws like the PSA, which are increasingly being deployed to silence dissent, even against those who have been democratically elected.
