Rajouri,August,27: As a part of the initiative to make district Rajouri free of single use plastics ,a major anti-polythene drive was conducted today in Rajouri district.The drive was conducted by Additional Deputy Commissioners and Sub divisional Magistrate on the directions of District Development Commissioner,Rajouri Mohammad Aijaz Asad.
It is pertinent to mention here that DDC earlier convened a meeting of district and sectoral officers and finalised the strategy for making the district free of single use plastic. Necessary directions were passed on to the concerned officers in this regard.
It was decided that no official meeting in the district shall make use of plastic bottles, plastics glasses, cups and all other single use plastic substances.
Acting on the decision taken in the meeting and on the directions of District Development Commissioner Rajouri,a major anti-polythene drive was conducted in the district today and polythene 146.520 kg above the standard of 50 microns has been seized which includes,27 kg at Nowshera,08 kg at sunderbani with fine of Rs.1900,45 kg at Rajouri and 13.520 kg at Thanamandi,40 kg at kalakote/Teryath and 13 kg at kotranka.
The officers during the drive appealed the public as well as to the shopkeepers to refrain from using polythene in day to day life and go for eco-friendly alternatives of polythene.They urged the people to shun the use of polythene and help district administration keep the district clean,green and free from plastic.
Further in order to achieve the goal of making the district free of single use plastic,the DDC has constituted 22 committees at District and Tehsil level which have been assigned the job of keeping a check on the use of single use plastic .These committees shall also promote the use of eco friendly alternatives of polythene such as jute bags in the district and create mass awareness in this regard. Pertinent to mention that a Jute bag manufacturing unit has been already set up in the district. District administration Rajouri is also planning to distribute free jute and cloth bags in order to make it a habit for the people to make use of alternatives to poly bags. Further, all other single use plastics shall be phased out by exploring the eco-friendly alternatives.
