RAJOURI, AUGUST 06:– Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday visited the flood-affected border districts of Rajouri and Poonch to assess the damage caused by the recent devastating floods and review the government’s ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts.
According to official sources, the Chief Minister first reached Poonch, where he visited several flood-hit areas that suffered extensive damage to life and property. He interacted with affected families, took stock of the ground situation, and directed officials to ensure speedy relief, rehabilitation, and restoration of essential services.
Later, Omar Abdullah travelled to Rajouri, where he inspected flood-affected areas and chaired review meetings with senior district officers and officials of various departments. During the meetings, he was briefed on the extent of damage, relief operations, and the progress of restoration work.
Rajouri and Poonch were among the worst-hit districts after flash floods triggered by incessant rainfall on July 19 and the days that followed. The disaster claimed several lives and caused widespread destruction across the twin border districts.
Official figures indicate that 16 bodies have been recovered in Poonch district, while six persons remain missing and are feared dead. In Rajouri district, three people lost their lives, while one Jal Shakti Department official is still missing.
The floods also caused extensive damage to roads, bridges, public infrastructure, agricultural land, residential houses, and other properties, with the overall losses estimated to run into several hundred crores of rupees.
The Chief Minister’s visit comes after criticism from opposition leaders, including BJP leaders from Rajouri, who had alleged that he had delayed visiting the flood-affected areas. The visit is being seen as an important step in reviewing the ground situation and accelerating relief, rehabilitation, and reconstruction efforts in the affected districts.
