  • My Journey with Autism: A Story of Love, Dedication, and Rehabilitation

My Journey with Autism: A Story of Love, Dedication, and Rehabilitation

    GNS ONLINE NEWS PORTAL

SRINAGAR AUGUST 12:As a mother of a child with autism, I’ve walked a path that few can understand. With over 17 years of experience in the field, I’ve transformed my journey into a mission to help countless families navigate the complexities of autism and other special abilities. As the founder of Exceptional Minds Centre, I’ve created a haven for children with special needs, providing them with comprehensive therapies and support.

    _The Importance of Early Intervention_

At Exceptional Minds Centre, children of different age groups receive therapies tailored to their unique needs. However, I emphasize that early intervention is crucial for optimal development. Children who receive therapy at a young age show significant improvements in their cognitive, social, and emotional abilities. Parents must be vigilant and watch for early signs of autism and other disorders, as timely intervention can make a world of difference.

_The Rise of Autism and Speech Delay Cases_

The increasing prevalence of autism and speech delay cases is a pressing concern. Early screen exposure, particularly mobile phone usage at a young age, has been linked to virtual autism and other disorders. I stress that parents must be aware of the risks and take steps to mitigate them.

    _Breaking the Stigma_

Unfortunately, social stigma still surrounds autism and special needs. Some parents tend to hide their child’s diagnosis, depriving them of essential support and therapy. I urge parents to accept their child’s condition and seek help, as early intervention can significantly improve their child’s quality of life.

    _Day Care Boarding Sessions_

Exceptional Minds Centre offers day care boarding sessions, which have proven to be highly effective in helping children with special needs. This approach allows children to adjust to a school-like routine, forming essential life skills. I recommend day boarding sessions over OPD/hourly sessions, as the latter can be limiting.

    _The Benefits of One-on-One Sessions_

I emphasize the importance of one-on-one sessions for children with special needs. Group sessions can be distracting, and children may struggle to follow commands. However, occasional group sessions can be beneficial in promoting social interaction and skills. It’s essential to strike a balance between individualized attention and socialization.

    _My Personal Experience_

As a mother, I’ve witnessed firsthand how group settings, such as buses or cabs can impact a child’s behavior. My son, who was initially mild autistic, began imitating more severe behaviors, such as head banging, after being exposed to other children with similar symptoms in a rehabilitation center bus. This experience led me to recognize the importance of separating children with varying levels of symptoms and to take proactive steps in establishing a rehabilitation center that caters to the unique needs of each child.

_A plea for Affordable Therapy and Supportive Infrastructure_

I request higher authorities to make monthly charges for therapies in rehabilitation centers affordable, ensuring every parent can access necessary treatment for their child. This would enable children with special needs to receive the support they deserve, regardless of their family’s financial situation. Furthermore, I request that rehabilitation homes be established, similar to those in other states of India, to provide a safe and supportive environment for individuals with special needs after their parents pass away.

_The Plight of Individuals with Special Needs on the Streets_

Whenever I walk on the street and see someone with a disorder roaming around, I worry about their future. What will happen to them after a certain age? Who will care for them? These questions haunt me, and I believe it’s our collective responsibility to ensure that individuals with special needs receive the support and care they deserve.

    _A Message to Parents_

“I understand the challenges you’re facing, and I wish you all the luck and patience in the world. Dealing with children with special needs is a lifelong journey, and it’s essential to approach it with love, compassion, and dedication. As someone who has walked this path myself, I know how overwhelming it can be, but I also know the immense rewards that come with it. Your child is unique and special, and with the right support and care, they can thrive and reach their full potential. Stay strong, stay patient, and never give up on your child. You are their rock, their support system, and their biggest advocate. I wish you all the best on this journey, and I’m confident that with time, patience, and love, you and your child will navigate the challenges of autism and special needs together.”
