CHENAB VALLEY OCT,30:-Among the most familiar names in the media landscape of Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in the Chenab region, Asif Iqbal Naik stands out as a journalist whose professional journey spans nearly three decades. Hailing from a middle-class family in Kishtwar, he began his career in print media around 1996 and has since established himself as a prominent voice in regional journalism.

With experience across print, electronic, and digital media, Asif Iqbal Naik has built his journalistic identity around reporting, investigation, and analysis. His approach to bringing issues into the public domain reflects a commitment to examining facts and gathering information before presenting a story to the public.

Journalism, however, is rarely a profession in which everyone agrees with every report. Several of his reports have attracted differing opinions, criticism, and debate within society. Yet, what makes his journalistic journey noteworthy is his willingness to stand by his reporting and defend his position when he believes it is supported by facts and evidence.

When One Person’s Mistake Becomes Society’s Concern : A few days ago, while discussing Asif Iqbal Naik with someone who expressed doubts about him, I shared a thought that I believe deserves serious consideration.

*When an individual makes a mistake that remains confined to that person, the consequences may be limited to that individual’s actions. But when an individual’s actions create widespread confusion, panic, or doubts within society, the issue extends beyond the individual and becomes a broader social concern*.

This is why responsible journalism matters. In an age when misinformation, unverified claims, social media trolling, and manufactured narratives can influence public opinion within minutes, the responsibility of a journalist to investigate, verify, and report facts becomes even more significant.

Beyond the Label of a Social Media Influencer : Today, some people tend to describe Asif Iqbal Naik primarily as a social media influencer. While digital platforms have transformed the way journalism reaches the public, reducing a journalist’s identity to their social media presence risks overlooking decades of professional experience.

It is important to remember that Asif Iqbal Naik was reporting through various media organisations long before social media became the dominant platform for public communication. His journalistic journey began during a period when terrorism and insecurity posed serious challenges to the Chenab region.

His reporting from those difficult years forms an important part of his professional background. The evolution of media platforms should not erase the history of journalists who worked through traditional media channels when circumstances were far more challenging.

Bringing Overlooked Issues into the Public Domain : Since my childhood, I have seen Asif Iqbal Naik working in the media profession and have followed his reporting standards with considerable interest.

Over the years, he has brought numerous local issues and lesser-known stories into the public domain, including matters that might otherwise have received limited attention. Such reporting can be particularly important in regions where ordinary citizens often struggle to make their voices heard.

Journalism is not merely about publishing updates or sharing viral content. At its best, it questions established narratives, examines uncomfortable realities, and brings public-interest issues to the attention of society and the authorities.

This is where investigative and ground-level reporting can make a meaningful difference.

The Chatroo Incident: Reporting During a Developing Story : In August 2026, Asif Iqbal Naik reported on the Chatroo incident and continued providing updates as the case developed. Such situations demonstrate the importance of sustained reporting, particularly when the public seeks accurate information about a serious incident.

In developing cases, however, responsible journalism also requires patience, verification, and a clear distinction between confirmed facts, allegations, and speculation. The public deserves timely information, but it equally deserves accuracy.

Appreciation Beyond Personal Differences : I do not claim that I agree with Asif Iqbal Naik on every issue. Like any two individuals, we may have our differences in opinion, interpretation, or perspective.

But differences of opinion should not prevent us from acknowledging professional merit where we believe it exists.

My appreciation for Asif Iqbal Naik is rooted in his long association with journalism, his experience in the Chenab region, and his role in bringing local issues and reports into public discussion.

A journalist should be judged not merely by whether everyone agrees with their reporting, but by the quality of their work, the credibility of their sources, their commitment to verification, and their willingness to be held accountable.

In an era when narratives can travel faster than facts, independent, responsible, and evidence-based journalism remains essential to an informed society.

Asif Iqbal Naik’s nearly three-decade journey in the media deserves recognition and critical engagement alike. We may question a report, challenge an interpretation, or disagree with an opinion, but we should never overlook the importance of journalism that seeks to bring the realities of our region before the public.

Respect for journalism does not mean unquestioning agreement with a journalist. It means recognising the value of facts, investigation, accountability, and the right of society to know.
