IAS Officer Recalls Childhood Memories, Says Mother’s Dedication, Hard Work and Compassion Shaped His Understanding of Public Service
SHAFQAT RAMZAN WANI
RAJOURI, SEPT 30:-Rajouri Deputy Commissioner Abhishek Sharma, IAS, has penned an emotional tribute to his mother on her retirement after 41 years of government service, recalling childhood memories and the values of dedication, punctuality, compassion and commitment to duty that he learned from her.
In his heartfelt message share on X (twitter) Sharma described how, as a child in Kishtwar, he would remain at home during heavy snowfall when schools were closed, while his mother would still prepare for work and walk to her office.
He recalled waiting for her on late evenings around August 15 and January 26, wondering why her office demanded so much of her time. He also remembered accompanying her to the office after school and quietly sitting in a corner, listening to the sound of her typewriter as she worked.
“As a child, I did not understand these things. Today, being in public service myself, I understand them very differently,” Sharma wrote.
The Deputy Commissioner said his own experience in public service has helped him understand the pressures, deadlines, late working hours and responsibilities that often remain invisible to people outside government offices.
He also recalled elderly women who used to visit their home carrying pension papers at a time when online services were not available. Their faith in his mother, he said, came from their belief that she would listen to them, guide them and try to help.
Sharma said one of the most important lessons his mother taught him was that “behind every government file is a person.”
He credited her with teaching him that there is no substitute for hard work and that punctuality, loyalty to duty and compassion towards those in need are essential values.
He also recalled her lesson on independence—to stand on one’s own feet, avoid becoming a burden when capable of managing independently, and, once capable, become a source of support for others.
While congratulating his mother on completing 41 years of service, Sharma said her example would remain with the family, her colleagues and the many people whose lives she touched.
He expressed particular hope that her journey would inspire women who quietly balance responsibilities at home and outside while building their lives through their own hard work.
Concluding the emotional message, Sharma wrote: “I am immensely proud of you, Mummy.”
He further expressed the hope that after giving so many years to her work and so much of herself to others, the years ahead would belong a little more to her.
The tribute presents a deeply personal side of a civil servant, highlighting how the values learned at home can continue to influence a person’s approach to public service.
