JAMMU, JUNE 09:-Minister for Jal Shakti, Forest, Ecology & Environment, and Tribal Affairs, Javed Ahmed Rana on Tuesday laid the foundation stone for restoration and construction of flood protection works worth ₹2.47 crore at Fattu Kotli, Garkhal along the left bank of River Chenab.
The Minister was accompanied by Mohan Lal Bhagat and senior officers of the department during the inauguration of the project.
Addressing the gathering, Rana said that strengthening flood management infrastructure remains a top priority of the Government. He stated that the intervention at Fattu Kotli would enhance the resilience of vulnerable areas against flood threats and help safeguard lives, property, and agricultural land from recurring floods.
The Minister emphasized the need for constructing durable and effective protective structures along vulnerable riverbanks and directed concerned departments to expedite flood protection works across the Union Territory ahead of the approaching monsoon season.
He instructed executing agencies to ensure timely completion of all projects while maintaining prescribed quality standards. “There should be no room for delays or lapses in works related to public safety,” he said.
Rana reiterated the Government’s commitment to developing robust flood mitigation infrastructure and assured that all vulnerable stretches along major rivers would be taken up on priority. He also called upon officers to adopt a proactive approach towards maintenance and strengthening of existing flood protection structures, particularly in erosion-prone and inundation-prone areas.
Earlier, the Minister visited Bhagatpur village in Marh Block of Jammu district and inspected the damaged embankment along the Tawi River. During the inspection, he sought detailed reports from officers regarding the restoration plan and directed them to accelerate ongoing works to ensure preparedness before the onset of the monsoon.
The Minister stressed that safeguarding people and infrastructure from flood-related risks remains a key concern of the Government and reaffirmed its commitment to implementing effective flood mitigation measures across Jammu and Kashmir.
During the visit, local residents and public representatives apprised the Minister of issues related to flood protection and water management in their respective areas. Rana assured them that all genuine concerns would be addressed in a time-bound manner.
