8,475 Challans, 187 Vehicles Seized as Traffic Police Rural Jammu Concludes Two-Week Drive

287 Awareness Programmes Held Across Kathua, Samba, Rajouri and Poonch

JAMMU, SEPT 14:– Traffic Police Rural Jammu has concluded a two-week intensive awareness-cum-enforcement drive targeting traffic violations, particularly those involving two-wheelers, across Kathua, Samba, Rajouri and Poonch districts.

The special drive was conducted from September 1 to 14, 2026, following an analysis of road accident data that highlighted the significant involvement of two-wheelers in accidents across the four districts.

According to Traffic Police Rural Jammu, 699 road accidents were reported between January 1 and July 31, 2026, resulting in 88 fatalities and injuries to 1,001 persons. Of these, two-wheelers were involved in 309 accidents, accounting for 44 per cent of the total accidents.

The data further revealed that two-wheelers were involved in 39 fatal accidents, representing 44 per cent of all fatal crashes. As many as 384 persons were injured in accidents involving two-wheelers, while 144 such cases involved single-vehicle accidents.

On National Highways, 102 accidents, or 41 per cent, involved two-wheelers, while on other roads, 210 accidents, or 47 per cent, were linked to two-wheelers. The analysis also showed that 27 per cent of accident victims were below 26 years of age. Overall, 445 out of 699 accidents, or 64 per cent, involved single vehicles.

During the special campaign, Traffic Police conducted 287 awareness programmes, including activities at educational institutions, tuition centres, bus stands, playgrounds, libraries and other public places. The programmes focused on educating citizens, particularly young people, about road safety and provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.

Four mega awareness programmes were personally conducted by SSP Traffic Rural Jammu Farooq Qaiser, one each at a Government Degree College in the four districts.

Symposiums and PowerPoint presentations were organised to sensitise students about responsible road behaviour.

Traffic personnel also conducted interaction sessions with road users, made public announcements through PA systems and distributed pamphlets carrying accident statistics and road-safety guidelines.

On the enforcement front, 8,475 challans were issued during the drive. As many as 5,767 riders were booked for riding without helmets, while 1,152 pillion riders were penalised for not wearing helmets. Another 1,106 violations of triple riding were recorded.

Traffic Police also booked 188 riders for using mobile phones while driving, 260 for dangerous driving and 146 for driving without valid driving licences. Three minors were found illegally riding two-wheelers, resulting in seizure of their vehicles, while 50 riders were booked for illegal vehicle modifications.

Overall, 187 vehicles were seized for various traffic violations during the special drive.

As part of its awareness-focused approach, Traffic Police Rural Jammu also conducted road-safety counselling sessions in Rajouri and Poonch under the “No-Challan, Only Counselling” initiative. Dedicated canopies were established where road users, particularly two-wheeler riders, were counselled on helmet use, traffic discipline, safe driving practices and the consequences of risky behaviour.

No challans were issued during these counselling sessions, with the focus remaining on dialogue, sensitisation and behavioural change. The initiative, officials said, received appreciation from members of the public.

Speaking on the occasion, SSP Traffic Rural Jammu Farooq Qaiser said similar special drives targeting other categories of vehicles, including Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs), would be launched in the coming days.

He appealed to motorists to strictly follow traffic rules and provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, adding that stringent enforcement against violators would continue in the interest of public safety.
