Udhampur Police organized youth awareness programme at Govt. Higher Secondary School Garhi, Udhampur

UDHAMPUR MAY 27:–District Police Udhampur held an awareness programme at Govt. Higher Secondary School, Garhi to spread awareness regarding ill effects of narcotics, drug abuse, and women empowerment among the students.

The event was organised on the direction of Dr. Vinod Kumar, IPS, Senior Superintendent of Police District Udhampur. Station House Officer Rehambal Inspector Rajesh Sharma chaired the event along with PSI Rohin Chalotra, ASI Subash Singh, Ms. Devika Sharma (Drug counsellor), Ms. Azra Khan, Social Worker at special cell Women Police Station, Udhampur.

SHO Police Station Rehambal Inspector Rajesh Sharma sensitised the youth about harmful effects of drug abuse and its impact on an individual, his/her family and society as a whole. The interaction with the youth also included topics such as gender equality, legal rights. The queries and grievances of the youth were properly addressed and answered. The youth was appealed to help the Police in eradicating the menace of drugs from the society by actively passing information to the police about narcotic activities. SHO P/S Rehambal also requested the youth to actively participate in sports activities and focus more on studies and start imbibing good qualities in order to become a better citizen and contribute in development of the nation.

Ms. Devika Sharma, counsellor Drug De addiction centre DPL Udhampur also delivered a lecture on drug addiction and factors promoting drug abuse in society. She highlighted various ill psychological effects of drug abuse on human brain. The link between crime and drug abuse was also presented before the youth. She also advised the youth to refrain from experimenting with drugs as it would eventually lead to addiction and destruction of mind, body and society in future. She appealed the youth to keep an eye on their family members as well as neighbours and report any indulgence in drugs to the Police immediately.

Ms. Azra Khan, Social worker of women rights project at special cell women police station also addressed the youth on a very important issue of women empowerment. The youth were made aware of the problems faced by women in modern society. She motivated the youth to step forward in order to promote gender equity and help in eliminating gender bias in society. The youth was apprised of various helplines numbers (such as 1098 for POSCO), available in order to report any untoward incident. She emphasized that education alone can dispel the darkness of discrimination from the society.
