RAJOURI DECM 28:-Serious allegations have surfaced regarding the use of substandard construction material in the approach wall of the Vadanta Ashram Bridge road, raising questions over the functioning of the Public Works Department (PWD) Rajouri.

Locals have alleged that the contractor executing the work has openly violated prescribed norms and the approved Bill of Quantities (BOQ). Instead of using crusher stone as mandated, nallah bajri has allegedly been used in the construction, compromising the quality and safety of the structure.

It has further been alleged that the contractor is carrying out illegal mining by extracting material directly from the river using heavy machinery, including a JCB/ Pokeland. Such mining is strictly prohibited under law. Residents have accused the Mining Department Rajouri of turning a blind eye and being complicit in these alleged corrupt practices.

The controversy has gained further traction in light of recent claims by Jammu and Kashmir Works Minister and Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, who has stated in media interactions that illegal mining has been stopped across the Union Territory. Acting on his directions, stone crushers have reportedly been closed until further orders.

However, locals point out that not a single stone crusher is currently operational in the Rajouri–Nowshera belt due to these closures. As a result, several developmental works have not commenced, while many ongoing projects have been stalled midway, leading to public inconvenience and cost escalation.

Residents have demanded an immediate on-site inspection of the Vadanta Ashram Bridge road work, strict action against those found violating norms, and a balanced policy to ensure availability of construction material without encouraging illegal mining. They have also urged the government to clarify its stand to prevent misuse of restrictions and ensure transparency and accountability in public works.
