SRINAGAR AUGUST 22:-The Sher-e-Kashmir Indoor Sports Complex came alive with energy and determination today as the three-day Wushu Selection Trials for the 20th Asian Games began in Srinagar. With nearly 200 athletes from across the nation vying for glory, the Valley has become the epicenter of India’s Wushu dreams.
The trials were inaugurated by Raksha Nikhil Khadke, who applauded the Wushu Association of India (WAI) for its meticulous planning and vision of achieving medals at the Games in Japan (September 19–October 4, 2026). She lauded Jammu & Kashmir as a natural hub for martial arts, urging the creation of a High-Performance Centre for Wushu in the region. Highlighting the broader impact, she said that hosting national and international events in the Valley would not only inspire athletes but also boost sports tourism.
The current phase of trials features the Sanda (combat) event, while the Taolu (routine) trials will be held in Imphal later this month. As per the selection policy, eight athletes across seven categories (five men and two women) will ultimately make it to the national squad. Their final selection will depend on ranking tournaments, national camps, and international exposure until June 2026, when India’s Asian Games team will be finalized.
The opening ceremony witnessed the presence of several distinguished guests including ADGP Armed J&K Anand Jain (IPS), Secretary J&K Sports Council Nuzhat Gul, WAI General Secretary Vijay Saraf, WAI CEO Suhel Ahmed, and National Chief Coach & Dronacharya Awardee Kuldeep Handoo. The Selection Committee, led by Handoo along with international judges and technical experts, will oversee the process with fairness and transparency.
With the weigh-in and draw of lots completed, the bouts are set to enthrall spectators over the next two days. For every participant, this is more than just a trial—it is the beginning of a dream to represent India, to fight with pride, and to bring home medals from the Asian Games.
As Srinagar hosts this historic event, the Valley once again proves its place as a rising hub of talent, courage, and sporting excellence.
