SRINAGAR DEC 17:-The Division of Forest Biology and Tree Improvement, Faculty of Forestry, SKUAST-Kashmir, inaugurated one-week training program titled “Prioritize Species with Diminished Genetic Variation or Confronting Imminent Risks” sponsored by MSME at Faculty of Forestry, Benhama, Ganderbal. The program is scheduled to run from December 17th to December 23rd, 2024.

The program was inaugurated by Prof. P. A. Khan, Head, FBT Division, Faculty of Forestry, SKUAST-K who highlighted the importance of fostering an entrepreneurial mindset among the younger generation through conservation of species genetic resources critical for ecosystem resilience that ensure sustainable livelihoods and environmental balance. He urged the youth to safeguard species that are on the brink while fostering sustainable development and encouraging active engagement with nature for societal well-being.

Dr. Mohamad Maqbool Rather, the Program Coordinator, provided a comprehensive overview of the training. He emphasized the significance of entrepreneurial initiatives in enabling self-sustaining livelihoods.

Dr. Rather outlined the hands-on design of the program, which focuses on equipping participants with practical skills. He highlighted how genetic diversity allows species to adapt to changing environmental conditions & low genetic variation makes species more vulnerable to diseases, habitat changes, and climate stressors resulting from habitat fragmentation, small population sizes, inbreeding, and overexploitation. He underscored how young individuals can contribute to income generation through innovative start-ups, ultimately fostering the overall growth of society.

Finally, Dr. Rather expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Prof. N.A. Ganie, Director of Planning and Monitoring Prof. H. R. Naik and Dean of the Faculty of Forestry Prof. S. A. Gangoo for their invaluable guidance and support. He also extended sincere appreciation to the Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSME), Government of India, for sponsoring the program.
