SRINAGAR JAN 28:-The residents of Baghwanpora, Lal Bazar, Srinagar, along with Idhara Imam Hussain (AS) Baghwanpora Lal Bazar and Idhara Auqaf Islamia Hakim Mohalla Baghwanpora Lal Bazar, have appealed to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and MLA Zadibal Tanveer Sadiq to intervene and ensure the approval of the long-pending NOC required for the construction of a sports stadium on 270+ kanals of land near Nigeen Lake. This initiative is seen as a crucial step to combat the rising drug menace in the area and provide the youth with constructive alternatives and sports facilities.

The two organizations, Idhara Imam Hussain (AS) and Idhara Auqaf Islamia, have consistently advocated for a drug-free Cherry Park near Nigeen Lake and have called for its transformation into a sports stadium to benefit the local youth. They emphasized that such a facility would serve as a positive outlet, keeping young individuals away from harmful substances.

The land, which was taken years ago from the Hakim family of Hakim Mohalla Baghwanpora by a previous government, has since been neglected and has become a hub for drug addicts. Despite contractors awaiting approvals from the tourism department to develop the area into a playground, progress remains stalled, causing frustration among the community.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, addressing the growing issue of drug addiction, recently emphasized the importance of a dual approach to combat the drug menace: “We must focus on both reducing supply and checking demand to tackle the drug issue effectively.” He also highlighted the importance of providing the youth with alternatives, such as playfields and sports facilities, to steer them away from substance abuse.

Renowned socio-political activist Hakim Suhail Abbas Kashmiri has strongly supported the residents and organizations in their demand. “If CM Omar Abdullah and MLA Tanveer Sadiq are committed to saving the youth, they must collaborate to ensure the NOC is approved and take the first step toward building a sports stadium,” Kashmiri stated.

Kashmiri further highlighted that the grievances of the youth have been brought to the forefront by journalists and media persons, but no concrete actions have been taken. Kashmiri and the organizations emphasized that this matter is beyond politics and is a call for immediate action to safeguard the future of the youth.

The residents, along with Idhara Imam Hussain (AS) and Idhara Auqaf Islamia, have urged MLA Tanveer Sadiq to advocate for the cause and push for swift approval from the Chief Minister. They have appealed to both leaders to ensure the stadium’s construction is completed by June 25. “This is about securing the future of our youth and creating a healthier, drug-free environment through meaningful engagement,” Kashmiri remarked.

This united call for action from the community and local organizations underscores the pressing need for recreational infrastructure to foster a brighter and safer future.

In a related statement, Farooq Abdullah, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, expressed deep concern over the growing drug addiction problem in the region. He emphasized the urgency of collective action and urged the community to confront the issue head-on. “We are Muslims by name, not by action. It is time we take real steps to address the drug menace and protect our youth from falling prey to it,” he said. His remarks echoed the sentiment that addressing the issue requires more than just verbal commitments, urging individuals and leaders to take concrete actions.
