CHENAB VALLEY SEPT 12:-Mehraj Malik, a passionate activist, began his political journey in 2013 with the Aam Aadmi Party in New Delhi. His mission is to uplift Bhalessa and advocate for those neglected by established politicians. Originating from a middle-class family in the scenic Bhalessa region of Doda district, Mehraj is known for his commitment to truth and vocal critique of political leaders who exploit the vulnerable.

Despite facing ridicule, he has emerged as a respected leader in Jammu and Kashmir, prioritising the needs of marginalised communities and fostering unity over divisive politics. In 2019, Mehraj was elected District Development Councillor, dedicating himself to the progress of the poor. While some may focus on his electoral success, many recognise his profound impact through tireless community work.

In a stunning display of determination and resilience, Mehraj Malik clinched a decisive victory in the highly contested 2024 Member of Legislative Assembly election from the 52 Doda East constituency. He triumphed over his opponent from the revitalised BJP, achieving an impressive margin of 4,500 votes. This electoral success not only underscores the effectiveness of Malik’s well-strategised campaign but also serves as a testament to the profound support and trust he has fostered within the local community. His ability to connect with the voters and address their concerns has clearly resonated, solidifying his position as a key figure in the region’s political landscape.

With a commanding presence and an unwavering commitment to serving his constituents, Malik wasted no time in addressing the immediate and pressing issues that plague the impoverished, marginalised, and often overlooked segments of society. Upon assuming his position in the Assembly Secretariat, he became a passionate advocate for the urgent redressal of these concerns, including access to necessities, educational opportunities, and healthcare services.

Malik’s dedication to bringing about meaningful change is underscored by his strategic focus on grassroots initiatives designed to uplift the downtrodden masses he represents. His vision extends beyond mere political rhetoric; he aims to implement sustainable programs that empower individuals and foster community development. By amplifying the voices of those who have long been silenced, Malik seeks to create a more equitable and inclusive society in Doda East, demonstrating his resolve to stand as a champion for the underprivileged.

Mehraj is a beacon of hope, reflecting honesty and a strong commitment to addressing the needs of those he serves amid political challenges. His journey into politics is remarkable, marked by authenticity and determination. Initially seen as unassuming, he became a relatable leader as he advocated for truth and accountability. His passion and resolve earned him the respect of common citizens, who appreciated his steadfastness against the powerful.

On September 8, 2025, Mehraj Malik, a prominent political figure and member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), was taken into custody at the Dak Bunglow in Doda under the contentious Public Safety Act. This legislation, often criticised for its broad applications, has been a point of contention in the region. Initially, he was relocated to Bhaderwah jail, a facility known for its harsh conditions, but was subsequently transferred to the District Jail in Kathua, a move that raised additional concerns among his supporters regarding his treatment.

Upon receiving the police dossiers about Malik’s case, his legal advisor expressed significant concerns about the procedural delays they encountered. It took more than 24 hours for the necessary documents to be procured, raising questions about the transparency and efficiency of the legal process in politically sensitive cases. The legal team is currently engaged in a thorough examination of the information to formulate their strategy for defence and any potential actions for Malik’s release.

Following Malik’s detention, a surge of public outrage swept across Jammu and Kashmir, underscoring the deep emotional and political connections the community has with their elected representative. Residents from his hometown swiftly mobilised, organising a large march towards the District Headquarters in Doda. Filled with passion, the protestors broke through barricades and barbed wire set up to restrict them, united in their unwavering demand for justice for Malik.

The turnout was significant, with demonstrators brandishing placards and chanting slogans demanding his immediate release. They conveyed a resolute message that if their pleas were ignored, they would continue their protests tirelessly, holding the administration accountable for any ensuing unrest. The atmosphere was charged with determination, as community leaders rallied the crowd, emphasising their commitment to defend democratic rights and challenge what they perceived as an unjust imprisonment of their political representative.

The detention of Mehraj Malik has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation from prominent figures in Jammu and Kashmir. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary publicly denounced the actions taken against Malik, emphasising the need for justice. Member of Parliament from Hyderabad, Assaduddin Owaisi, also expressed strong opposition to the detention, aligning himself with calls for accountability.

Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal, National Conference leader Dr. Farooq Abdullah, and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Chief Mehbooba Mufti, along with Congress leader Ghulam Ahmed Mir and various legislators, were equally vocal. They joined a chorus of political and social activists, including Ashiq Wani, demanding the immediate revocation of the Public Safety Act (PSA) under which Malik was detained.

These leaders issued a stern warning that if the government did not take prompt and decisive action, the region could experience significant unrest and widespread demonstrations. Many believe the administration would be held accountable for any resulting turmoil, reflecting a growing frustration with the increasing use of controversial legal measures that threaten civil liberties. This sentiment has been building over time, as citizens become increasingly weary of policies that infringe upon their rights and freedoms.

At the heart of this movement is Mehraj’s compelling story—a narrative rich with courage and perseverance. He embodies the idea that true leadership lies in genuine connection with the community. Through his grassroots efforts, he has demonstrated to the people of Jammu and Kashmir that financial power is not the only, nor the most effective, way to win public affection and trust. While it’s often easy for those with abundant resources to sway elections and promote their interests through wealth, Mehraj stands as a testament to the value of integrity, authenticity, and empathy.

His journey is not just about personal achievement; it highlights the struggles of the poor and marginalised, reminding us that real change comes from understanding and engaging with their challenges. Mehraj’s remarkable resilience and commitment to uplifting those around him serve as a powerful inspiration, encouraging others to prioritise connection and compassion over mere monetary influence. His story resonates deeply within the community, instilling hope and motivation for a brighter future.
