International Day for biological diversity celebrated at Faculty of Agriculture Wadura SKUAST-Kashmir.

SOPORE MAY 22:–The International Day for biological diversity on June 22, 2023 under the theme “From Agreement to Action: Building Back Biodiversity.” was organized by Biodiversity Club & NSS, Faculty of Agriculture, Wadura, SKUAST-K.

This day serves as a reminder of the incredible diversity of species, ecosystems, and genetic resources that make our planet unique. It is a time to reflect on the web of life and recognize the intricate connections between humans and the natural world. Biodiversity encompasses the variety of plants, animals, microorganisms, and the ecosystems they inhabit. It is the foundation of our food, water, air, and overall well-being. The alarming rate of species extinction, habitat loss, and degradation poses a significant threat to biodiversity. The International Day for Biological Diversity aims to raise awareness about these challenges and promote efforts to protect and conserve biodiversity.

At the outset, Prof. Raihana H. Kanth, Dean Faculty of Agriculture, highlights the importance of celebration of International Biodiversity a need for conservation, sustainable, utilization of bioresource. The subject matter expert Dr. Anzar Ahmad Khuroo, Associate Professor, Centre for Biodiversity & Taxonomy, University of Kashmir said that the high emissions of carbon dioxide results in global warming and added that only planting more trees can save earth from the rising temperatures. He gave a detailed pictorial presentation of the plant biodiversity of Kashmir valley. Considering the value of biodiversity for sustaining the balance of planet, the participants pledged to take action for finding out nature-based solutions to climate, health issues, food and water security and sustainable livelihoods so that shared future is built for all life.

The event was celebrated by organizing quiz, debate and speech competitions. The winners of the competitions conducted during the event were felicitated by the Dean with certificates and prizes. The programme was attended by Heads of various Divisions, Faculty members and more than 120 UG/PG students of the faculty & students of nearby schools.
