RAJOURI, MAY 09;–In an incident of mistaken identity, soldiers mann ing fence in the Nowshera sector of the Rajouri district opened fire on a mentally unsound man who started running after being challenged.
An injured mentally unsound person has been identified as Anil Kumar (30) s/o Bhagwan Dass resident of village Charyala in the Kalal area of Nowshera tehsil.
Sources said that Anil was first treated in Army’s medical facility located in a forward location and then was shifted to the Army hospital at Rajouri.

He has received injuries on his leg and in the stomach and is responding to treatment and his condition is stable.
At about 7.30 am soldiers manning fence near the Baba Khori area spotted a man hiding in the bushes.
He was challenged, but Anil didn’t pay any heed and started running following which a soldier opened fire on his leg.
After it was established that the injured is local resident and mentally unsound, he was shifted to a nearby Army healthcare facility and provided immediate treatment.
“Mentally unsound man roaming near LoC fence was shot at by the soldiers after he started running on being challenged. He was hospitalised later and his condition is stable in the Army hospital at Rajouri,” said a senior officer.
In the evening Army brought Anil’s mother to Rajouri to look after him in the hospital.
People of Nowshera town informed that Anil is mentally unsound and mostly used to roam in the bazaars carrying photos of deities.
