RAJOURI SEPTEMBER 02:-The Central Government’s allocation of just Rs 209 crore as the Central share for the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) is nothing short of a cruel joke on the people of Jammu and Kashmir. After facing massive devastation caused by flash floods, landslides, cloudbursts, and relentless rains, the region is struggling to breathe, rebuild, and recover.

Let’s be clear: the rehabilitation and reconstruction needs exceed Rs 2 lakh crore, considering the scale of destruction, displacement, and damage to infrastructure, agriculture, livelihoods, and homes. What can Rs 209 crore possibly achieve in the face of such widespread suffering?

This is not aid — this is tokenism.

While the rest of the country expects swift and adequate relief in times of crisis, why is Jammu and Kashmir constantly expected to settle for crumbs? Is this what the much-publicized promises of development and integration amount to — lip service and meagre handouts during a humanitarian crisis?

It’s time the Centre stopped patronizing the region and started responding with seriousness, sensitivity, and scale. Anything less is negligence at best and discrimination at worst.

The people of Jammu and Kashmir deserve better. And they will not stay silent.
