**Exit polls banned from November 6 to 11 to ensure fair voting process
RAJOURI/DELHI OCT 26:-The Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued strict directives to ensure a fair and peaceful electoral process during the upcoming Bihar Assembly Elections and bye-elections. The Commission has reminded media outlets and political stakeholders of the prohibition on broadcasting or publishing any election-related material during the mandatory silence period and has also banned the conduct and publication of exit polls during specified hours.
As per the election schedule announced by the ECI on October 6, polling in Bihar will take place in two phases — on November 6 and November 11, 2025.
Citing Section 126 (1)(b) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, the Commission stated that no election matter shall be displayed on television, radio, or similar platforms in any polling area during the 48-hours period preceding the close of polls. This “silence period” is intended to provide voters a calm environment to reflect and make an informed choice, free from last-minute campaigning or media influence.
The ECI has reiterated that all TV and radio channels, as well as cable networks, must ensure that programmes broadcast or displayed during this period do not include any material, discussion, or opinion that could promote or prejudice the prospects of any party or candidate. This restriction also extends to the display or discussion of opinion polls during the silence period.
Further, under Section 126A of the Representation of the People Act, the Commission has prohibited the conduct and dissemination of exit polls between 7:00 AM on November 6 and 6:30 PM on November 11, 2025. Any violation of these provisions is a punishable offence, carrying a penalty of up to two years of imprisonment, a fine, or both.
Reiterating the importance of maintaining the sanctity of the electoral process, the ECI has urged all media houses to adhere strictly to these guidelines and uphold the spirit of free and fair elections.
