RAJOURI DEC 03:-The International Day of Persons with Disabilities was observed with enthusiasm at Dak Bungalow Rajouri. Deputy Commissioner Rajouri, Abhishek Sharma, graced the occasion and interacted with differently-abled persons and emphasized the collective responsibility of society to ensure equality and accessibility for all.

Addressing the gathering, the Deputy Commissioner remarked, *“This is not just an event but a moment to recognize that all of us are differently-abled in our unique ways. There should be no room for injustice, and we must commit to providing equal opportunities and accessible infrastructure for differently-abled individuals.”*

He highlighted the need for a mindset shift in society, urging the public and students to refrain from bullying and instead support and encourage their differently-abled peers. *“Boosting their confidence is essential so they can pursue their dreams. Sensitization campaigns in schools and public spaces, particularly in hilly and remote areas, must be carried out through platforms like One-Stop Centres and child helplines,”* he added.

*DC drew attention to inspiring achievements, mentioning Sheetal Devi, a para-archer from Kishtwar, Jammu and Kashmir, who recently won a bronze medal in the mixed team compound event at the 2024 Paralympics. He emphasized that such role models must be celebrated to inspire and encourage other differently-abled individuals to strive for excellence.*

During the event, the District Social Welfare Officer (DSWO), Abdul Raheem, provided updates on key initiatives. He shared that 945 beneficiaries have recently been covered under welfare schemes, with prosthetic aids distributed to them. Legal aid for differently-abled persons is also being actively facilitated through the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA). Furthermore, pensions for physically disabled persons are timely sanctioned under the Integrated Social Security Scheme (IGDPS).

As part of the program, the DC distributed tricycles and prosthetic aid kits to beneficiaries, encouraging them to pursue their aspirations with confidence. He reiterated the importance of ensuring accessibility in schools and other public infrastructure for differently-abled persons.

The event was attended by Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr. Manohar Rana, Tehsil Social Welfare Officer (TSWO), other officials, and a large number of beneficiaries.
