“CHIRAG TALEY ANDHERA”: Chenab region faces frequent unscheduled electric cuts during the upcoming winter, although receiving 200 Units of free electricity remains an unfulfilled promise

    GNS ONLINE NEWS PORTAL

    SHAFQAT SHEIKH

CHENAB VALLEY DECM 01:-The Chenab region is experiencing frequent unscheduled power cuts, severely impacting life in rural and hilly areas where electricity is a rarity during winter. Despite substantial electricity generation in the Chenab Valley, the power supply is erratic, with prolonged shutdowns exceeding 20 hours daily, amidst soaring tariffs.

Ashiq Hussain Wani, a resident of Bunjwah, has asserted that his complaints to the power department’s top brass have been ignored, despite the region’s winter crisis and the Choudhary Power project’s construction in 2009, which generated 20 MW of electricity. He pointed out that the area is experiencing weekly complete shutdowns, likely to impact all sectors, and unscheduled power cuts are causing consumer headaches. Additionally, the government’s inaction in addressing power pilferage and taking action against ‘power thieves’, including individuals, government departments, and influential people, has led to frequent and extended unscheduled power cuts during winter months, which have become a routine affair.

    SHAFQAT SHEIKH

The Bunjwah region in Kishtwar district, despite being one of the most remote areas with Tehsil headquarters status, shares boundaries with Padder, Himachal, Bhalessa, and Saroor. Located 70 km from the district headquarters Kishtwar, the region lacks proper electrification, with some villages yet to experience electric lighting. The hilly terrain is prone to unpredictable weather patterns, making it challenging to forecast the weather. Electrification efforts prior to 1990 have been incomplete, with ongoing work in some areas, but no scheduled maintenance has been performed, neglecting the struggles of the local population. The concerned authorities have failed to renovate or repair damaged wooden poles and barbed wire, resulting in consumers being charged flat rates that have increased exponentially, now exceeding 1040 per month, without any corresponding improvement in electricity supply.

Babar Nafice highlighted that the Power Development Department in Bunjwah has become ineffective, with power cuts and damaged infrastructure persisting due to lack of repairs. Despite collecting substantial monthly fees, the department has failed to upgrade infrastructure, including replacing wooden poles and wires attached to trees. This inaction has resulted in frequent power cuts, and the department’s apathy has caused concern. Multiple requests have been made to the authorities, but they have ignored the issues, compelling consumers to pay monthly bills without any tangible improvements.

Bunjwah is supplied with electricity from Thathri Grid Station through the Kahara Bunjwah feeder, which diverges from Dunadi Bunjwah and Dunadi Kahara at a distance of approximately 40km from the Tehsil headquarters in Bunjwah. The existing electrical infrastructure, installed in 1990, is still awaiting renovation. In 2016, the coalition government, headed by then Chief Minister Mrs. Mehbooba Mufti, approved the Bunjwah project, which remains incomplete. Regrettably, the concerned authorities have been unresponsive, neglecting the long-standing demands of the local community. Work on the electric grid station in Bunjwah began but was halted due to unknown reasons, and no one is advocating for the timely completion of the project to alleviate the suffering of the general public.

Adil Hussain, a resident of Bunjwah, expressed concerns about the sudden surge in electricity bills, which disproportionately affects the majority of the population living below the poverty line. These individuals reside in small accommodations, typically one or two rooms, and are burdened with a substantial charge of 1040. Moreover, despite repeated requests to higher authorities to address the issue, no improvements have been made, and the local employees continue to harass the community, exploiting the situation by justifying the tariff hikes.

The marginalized consumers are willing to pay the prescribed tariffs, provided they receive consistent services without extended outages and the renovation of damaged infrastructure, including wooden poles and barbed wires, to mitigate risks and hazards. However, the government’s commitment to offer 200 units of free electricity, under the leadership of Chief Minister Shri Omar Abdullah, remains an unachieved goal, particularly with the recent tariff increase and continued unscheduled power interruptions during winter.

The underprivileged consumers respectfully solicit the personal intervention of the Honorable Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory, Shri Omar Abdullah, to establish a panel and reevaluate the electricity tariffs in rural areas, specifically Bunjwah, which is vulnerable to snowfall and experiences prolonged power shutdowns when clouds are in the sky.

Halting of buses at Panta Chowk, Bemina has caused immense hardships to commuters

SRINAGAR, DECM 01: Expressing serious concern over the barring of Road Transport Corporation (RTC) buses from entering Srinagar city limits, RLJP State President JKUT Abrar Ahmad Bhat has said that restrictions have caused hardships to seamless passenger movement, disproportionately affecting thousands of daily commuters who depend on affordable and accessible transport.

RTC bus service is now a crucial backbone of public transport and has become a lifeline for the common people. Reportedly these restrictions, in effect since November 4 when the Assembly session commenced, is causing a daily revenue loss of Rs. 4 lakh to the state exchequer.

Bhat highlighted that buses from north Kashmir districts are stopped at Bemina Bypass, while those from south Kashmir are halted at Pantha Chowk. “The common people are facing immense hardships. The initiative had boosted transport connectivity but also marked the beginning of a financial turn over for the debt-laden Corporation.

Bhat urges the administration to lift restrictions on these RTC buses from entering Srinagar city forthwith keeping in view the persistent public demand.

  • An Open Letter to Chief Minister Jammu and Kashmir From Sajad Lone (X) handle

An Open Letter to Chief Minister Jammu and Kashmir From Sajad Lone (X) handle

    GNS ONLINE NEWS PORTAL

    Dear Chief Minister Sahib,

It is time to apprise you of the changelessness that this government is identified with.

During the election period, Your body language and utterances were aggressive. Your whole campaign was customised against the BJP. Your electoral script was a blend of escalation and scapegoating.

And it worked for you. A massive mandate you got.

After elections we have seen you descending from the peaks of escalation to language of temperance. The aggression is gone. The utterances have been watered down. The belligerence has been replaced by humiliating visuals of you gifting shawls to the top BJP leadership.

What was the hurry to go to Delhi and gift shawls. From a rebel with a sword in his hand mounted on a horse to a minion grovelling on his knees, sword replaced by a shawl. What a comedown.

The Kashmiris thought they taught the BJP a lesson during the elections by voting for a person who they perceived as being most opposed to BJP. Your shawl draping visuals of surrender meant that BJP had actually taught the people of Kashmir a lesson. The BJP had the last laugh.

You displayed a rookie enthusiasm to attack them during elections and are now displaying a rookie enthusiasm in surrendering to them. So desperate you seem to get a ‘foot in the BJP door’, unable to hide your yearning for Boundary-crossing. And your shawl gifting spree, your desire to be the BJP good boy, your evident discomfort in having to take on the “Congress Excess Baggage”—- is a kick in the teeth to all those Kashmiris who were tricked into believing that you are the ultimate secular warrior to take on the communally depraved BJP.

There is an elected government and the parallel LG government. There are no business rules in sight. Business rules are in essence demarcation of respective competencies.. And there is total confusion. You have been ring fenced.

You come across as a horse shot through the legs. Where is your anger that you displayed during elections. All that monkey faced anger, wild gesticulation of arms— was it all for local Kashmiris like us. Why don’t you use the same language against the BJP now or for that matter the LG. What you are doing today sets the rules for future engagements between Delhi and Srinagar. The UT is a ticking bomb. As long as statehood eludes us, the process of erosion of whatever little identity is left will continue unimpeded.

Are you scared. Or are you compromised. Whose side are you on ??

The Kashmiris have given you the mandate. Go out there and fight for them. Where is the roar that you threatened to roar. Why am I and many more like me hearing a meow.

Not a single day passes when the elected government is not undermined. And now two employees have been terminated. Again you are quiet.

They say, “When the tide goes out, you find out who is swimming naked”. We all know who was swimming naked.

And while you don’t dare speak against the LG or the BJP, your Toadies are at it making list of small level government employees who they believe have not been politically favourable to them. And single transfers will yet again become a norm. Again it is the Kashmiri you will punish. You don’t have the guts to fight Delhi. But you will fight and punish the Kashmiri. That you have been doing for decades.

This feeling of being overprivileged and you being some precious cargo which India or Delhi can’t do without —- Get off that high horse. They let you prosper because you are pliable. And may I say Shawl-able. And in Kashmir’s destruction and erosion of their identity, you are Delhi’s best bet.

I don’t know Urdu that well but I know a phrase in Urdu. “Jab Khuda husan deta hai nazakat Aa he jaati hai.” I tried searching for an English equivalent in your context. I couldn’t find one. But what I did find was the following.
“A bull does not become king just by entering the palace, but the palace becomes a barn.”
