RAJOURI, OCT 10:-XYZ (name withheld), a young woman from a modest rural background, has emerged as an inspiring example of courage and transformation after battling drug addiction.

At just 18, she began working as a labourer to support her family. Life was difficult, and moments of comfort were rare. In a vulnerable phase, her older cousins introduced her to heroin, assuring her it would ease her pain and “set her free.”

“At first, they gave it to me for free,” XYZ recalls softly. “But soon, I couldn’t live without it.”

Within months, she was trapped in the grip of addiction. Her health deteriorated rapidly — she became frail, withdrawn, and hopeless. Witnessing her daughter’s suffering, her mother approached the local hospital’s Addiction Treatment Centre (ATC) for help. Fortunately, XYZ agreed to undergo treatment — a decision that marked the turning point of her life.

At the centre, doctors diagnosed her with opioid use disorder and immediately started her on Buprenorphine (4 mg per day) to control withdrawal symptoms and reduce cravings without inducing a high. Alongside medication, she received regular counselling and psychological therapy, helping her regain confidence, purpose, and emotional stability.

In a compassionate gesture, Deputy Commissioner Rajouri, Abhishek Sharma, personally visited the residence of the recovering patient and assured all possible assistance for her complete rehabilitation. The DC directed officials to ensure:

Continuous counselling and psychological support

A comprehensive rehabilitation plan

Skill development and training opportunities

During the visit, the DC was accompanied by the District Child Protection Officer (DCPO), Tehsildar, SHO, and CWC Member Shazad Lone.

Expressing satisfaction over the recovery progress, DC Sharma reiterated that the administration is committed to helping every individual struggling with substance abuse. “No one should fight addiction alone,” he said, emphasizing the district’s focus on counselling, awareness, and skill-based rehabilitation under the Nasha Mukht Abhiyan.

Today, XYZ is steadily rebuilding her life — reconnecting with her family, regaining self-confidence, and preparing to undertake skill training for a dignified livelihood. Her journey stands as a powerful testament to hope, courage, and the life-changing impact of timely intervention.
