DDC Rajouri finalises modalities for implementation of Jal Shakti Abhiyan* 2394 Rain Water Harvesting Ponds to be constructed through Community participation

Rajouri July,22:District Development Commissioner,Rajouri Mohammad Aijaz Asad today convened a meeting with the District and Sectoral officers in order to finalize the modalities for implementation of the Jal Shakti Abhiyan in the district.

It is pertinent to mention here that some parts of the country are reporting water shortage,the GoI has launched a conservation campaign Jal shakti Abhiyan with an emphasis on water conservation.The important part of the ‘Jal Shakti Abhiyan’ is that it will focus on five aspects – water conservation and rainwater harvesting, renovation of traditional and other water bodies, reuse of water and recharging of structures, watershed development, and intensive afforestation, Drinking Water Sanitation by involving different departments.

A threadbare discussion was held on intervention areas like water conservation and rain water Harvesting Renovation of traditional water bodies,reuse and recharge structures,watershed development and intensive Afforestation.

SE PHE and I&FC informed that the water demand of the district is 13.26 MGD while availability of water is only 9.66 MGD and there is a deficit of 3.60 MGD.Similarly he also informed that the area available for cultivation in the district is 54600 hect. While 11707 hect.is under assured irrigation and 44693 hect.remains unirrigated.

Assistant Commissioner Development,Akhtar Qazi said that the water harvesting plan in respect of Rural Development Department has been prepared.He also informed that in order to recharge the groundwater and conserve the runoff rainwater the department has a target to construct one water harvesting tank per ward of the panchayat. A total of 2394 water harvesting tanks to be constructed through community participation.He also informed that a water harvesting tank can store 8000 liters of water.In the first phase the water tanks to be constructed preferably at the Government Buildings like panchayat ghar ,PMAY house.Regarding IWMP the officer informed that a plan for the construction of water harvesting tanks have been submitted.

While speaking on the occasion the DDC said that keeping in view the present scenario of depletion of groundwater in most of the state,it has become utmost importance to conserve the water. He stressed on conservation of water resources by different scientific and traditional techniques. They stressed on water conservation through rainwater harvesting, renovation of traditional and other water bodies, reuse of water, bore-well recharge structure. He also stressed on the plantation of more trees in higher reaches which help in the percolation of water into the soil.It was also informed in the meeting that nearly 5.00 lakhs sapling to be planted under Jal Shakti Abhiyan.

The DDC directed the BDOs to gear up their men and machinery to realize the targets of Jal Shakti Abhiyaan and also motivate the Panchs and Sarpanchs to ensure their participation through means of awareness.Chief Agriculture Officer and District Horticulture Officer were also directed to work in tandem to achieve maximum penetration under the scheme.

The meeting was attended by Assistant Commissioner Development,Akhtar Qazi,Chief Agriculture officer,Janak Raja,Chief Horticulture officer ,Rakesh Kotwal, Divisional Forest officer ,social Forestry,Rakesh Saraf,DFO,Nowshera ,Rajouri,
Project Officer,IWMP,Shazia,District Panchayat Officer,Dr.Abdul Khabir,Deputy Director Planning ,Bilal Mir,Block Development Officers and other sectoral Officers.
