Kashmir’s Iconic Houseboats, Traditional Boats Face Threat of Disappearance

SRINAGAR JANUARY 26:-As the nation celebrated its cultural diversity on Republic Day, Kashmir’s iconic houseboats and traditional boats were showcased as symbols of the region’s rich heritage. However, behind the spotlight lies a growing concern over the gradual disappearance of these historic watercraft from Kashmir’s lakes and rivers.

Kashmir’s famed water bodies—Dal Lake, Nigeen Lake, the Jhelum River and Chuntikul—once hosted thousands of traditional boats, including cargo boats, Dunga boats and houseboats. These vessels played a crucial role in transportation, trade and tourism, while also reflecting the region’s unique craftsmanship and hospitality.
Over the years, this vibrant legacy has witnessed a sharp decline. Cargo boats have vanished completely, while only around 50 Dunga boats remain from the thousands that once plied the waters. The number of houseboats, once a defining feature of Kashmir’s tourism landscape, has reduced to nearly 800.

Expressing concern over the situation, social activist Tariq Ahmed said that while national recognition of Kashmir’s heritage is welcome, the reality on the ground points to an alarming erosion of cultural identity. He urged collective efforts by authorities, cultural bodies and the public to protect and preserve these iconic boats before they disappear altogether.

The decline of traditional boats has also affected the livelihoods of communities associated with boat-making, maintenance and tourism. Experts stress that immediate preservation and revival measures are essential to safeguard this living heritage and sustain the distinctive character of Kashmir’s waterways for future generations.

The issue has renewed calls for coordinated action to ensure that the boats which once defined the scenic beauty and cultural soul of Kashmir do not fade into history.
