SRINAGAR JAN, 15:-Panchayat Lasjan-B on Thursday witnessed a strong wave of grassroots mobilisation as Congress workers, civil society members and local residents gathered under the banners of MGNREGA Bachao Sangram and Hamari Riyasat, Hamara Haq, turning the programme into a broader political assertion against economic marginalisation and democratic rollback in Jammu and Kashmir.

Leading the mobilisation, Srinagar District Congress Committee President Dr. Audil Farooq Mir asserted that the struggle to protect MGNREGA is inseparable from the larger fight for dignity, democratic rights and the restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Audil launched a sharp attack on the BJP-led Central government, accusing it of systematically weakening MGNREGA through delayed wage payments, reduction in guaranteed workdays and sustained budgetary cuts. He dismissed claims of administrative inefficiency, calling the dilution of the scheme a deliberate policy choice.

“This is not neglect; it is calculated sabotage. It is an assault on the dignity of labour and a betrayal of the constitutional promise of social justice,” he said, warning that weakening MGNREGA is pushing vulnerable families into debt, distress migration and long-term insecurity.
Dr. Audil emphasised that the defence of MGNREGA is intrinsically linked to the restoration of democratic status and political agency in Jammu and Kashmir. “Hamari Riyasat, Hamara Haq is not merely a slogan; it is a constitutional necessity. Rights to fair wages, timely payments and guaranteed employment cannot survive without statehood and democratic empowerment,” he stated, reiterating Congress’s demand for a minimum daily wage and urgent revitalisation of the scheme.
Beyond employment issues, participants raised serious concerns over governance failures, including shortcomings in the SDA Master Plan, flawed basin zoning by the Irrigation and Flood Control Department, persistent flood vulnerabilities and stagnation in agricultural development across Srinagar’s urban and peri-urban areas.

Congress leaders warned that policy incoherence and institutional apathy are steadily deepening economic fragility and exposing communities to recurring crises. Responding to the concerns, Dr. Audil called for immediate corrective measures, cautioning that continued neglect of infrastructure planning, flood management and agrarian support would further erode livelihoods.
The programme concluded with a collective resolve to intensify the MGNREGA Bachao Sangram and Hamari Riyasat, Hamara Haq movements across constituencies, signalling a sustained political push by the Congress to place labour dignity, economic security and constitutional rights at the centre of its vision for Jammu and Kashmir.
