SRINAGAR DECM 29:-For over a century, the Mirwaiz family has shaped Kashmir’s intellectual, spiritual, and political landscape. From the historic pulpit of Jama Masjid, Srinagar, the Mirwaiz’een nurtured Islamic scholarship rooted in social responsibility, moral clarity, and public service. The family consistently championed education, ethical governance, communal harmony, and resistance to injustice.

Through institutions such as Anjuman-e-Auqaf Jama Masjid, Anjuman-e-Nusrat-ul-Islam, and Darul Khair, they safeguarded religious endowments, preserved cultural and spiritual heritage, and advanced public welfare. These are not symbolic bodies but living commitments to society.

The Mirwaiz institution has never been about titles or positions. It stands for service, sacrifice, and steadfastness. Generations may change and regimes may shift, but its relevance endures because its contribution is not recorded in official documents alone—it lives in the collective memory and conscience of Kashmir. Their stature needs no validation; their legacy speaks for itself.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq represents this centuries-old tradition that has remained central to Kashmir’s religious, social, and political life. As the Valley’s chief religious cleric, the Mirwaiz has historically served as the moral conscience of society, guiding people through faith, reason, and dialogue rather than force.

True to this legacy, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has consistently advocated peaceful engagement and dialogue in Kashmir, protection of Islamic values rooted in moderation and compassion, social reform through education and unity, and the courage to speak truth to power. This principled stance has often come at a heavy personal cost, including prolonged restrictions and repeated house detentions.

For his unwavering commitment to peace, reconciliation, and dialogue, the Mirwaiz has endured profound personal sacrifice. His father was assassinated, his uncle was killed inside a mosque—violating the sanctity of a place meant for prayer. Institutions of learning such as the Islamia School were set ablaze, and even his home was bombed, turning loss and trauma into lived reality.

Yet, despite grief, intimidation, and relentless pressure, he did not abandon the path of restraint and reason. Instead of yielding to bitterness or revenge, the Mirwaiz chose moral courage over anger, dialogue over violence, and faith over fear.

These sacrifices are a stark reminder that the call for peace in Kashmir has often been paid for not in words, but in blood, loss, and suffering—borne quietly, with dignity. This is not rhetoric; it is the price of principled resistance and the burden carried by those who refuse to let violence define the future.
