Rich Tribute Paid to Dr. Masud on death anniversary ; Chief Minister Releases Books and Calls for Focused Research on Tribal Issues

JAMMU DECM, 16:-A solemn and dignified function was organised at the Gurjar Desh Charitable Trust (GDCT), Channi Himmat, Jammu, to pay rich tributes to the life, vision and exemplary contributions of Late Dr. Masud A Chaudhary, former Additional Director General of Police and Founder Vice-Chancellor of Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (BGSBU).

The programme brought together political leadership, senior administrators, academics, civil society members and representatives of the Gujjar-Bakerwal community to collectively remember and honour a towering personality whose life was dedicated to public service, institution-building and social empowerment.

The function was graced by Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, as the Chief Guest. Among those present were Dr. Farooq Abdullah, President of J&K National Conference and former Chief Minister of J&K; Javed Ahmed Rana, Minister; along with senior political leaders, former ministers, senior officers, eminent citizens and community representatives.

Their presence reflected the widespread respect and admiration commanded by Dr. Masud A Chaudhary across political, administrative and social spheres.

On the occasion, Chief Minister released three books dedicated to the life, thought and legacy of Dr. Masus A Chaudhary, namely “From Shield to Vision: The Extraordinary Journey of Masud Chaudhary” authored by Er. Ghani Gayoor, “Dr. Masud Chaudhary & BGSBU” authored by JZakir Malik Bhallesi, and “Everything is Cursed” authored by Ms. Javeria M.

The release of these works was described as a meaningful step towards documenting and disseminating the intellectual, administrative and human values that Dr. Masud A Chaudhary stood for.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah highlighted the remarkable life journey of Dr. Masud, describing him as a visionary administrator an institution builder of rare calibre and an inspiring role model for generations to come.

He lauded Dr. Masud’s transition from a distinguished career in policing to the academic world, where he laid the foundations of BGSBU as a centre of higher learning in a remote region.

The Chief Minister also appreciated the pioneering role of Girjar Desh Charitable Trust in preserving and promoting Dr. Masud’s intellectual and social legacy.

He urged the Trust to take the lead in undertaking focused and evidence-based research on issues critical to tribal communities, particularly the impact of climate change on transhumant and nomadic populations, the actual reach and outcomes of reservation benefits and the pressing need for a dedicated Tribal University to address long-standing educational and research gaps in the region.

Dr. Farooq Abdullah, while paying glowing tributes, recalled Dr. Masud as a person of integrity, foresight and deep commitment to social justice.

He called upon the Gujjar-Bakerwal and other tribal communities to adopt education as the primary instrument of empowerment, in line with Dr. Masud’s lifelong vision.

Stressing the importance of unity, awareness of constitutional rights and sustained engagement with democratic institutions, he observed that these elements were essential for the social, economic and political advancement of tribal communities.

Minister Javed Ahmed Rana spoke with emotion and gratitude about the guidance, values and teachings of his elder brother, Dr. Masud, which he said had played a decisive role in shaping his personal outlook and political journey.

He also briefed the gathering on the initiatives being undertaken by the Tribal Affairs Department for the welfare of tribal communities, including the strengthening of hostels and residential schools, expansion of scholarship schemes and focused infrastructure development in tribal-dominated areas.

Earlier, several speakers, including former Chairmen of GDCT, senior officers, jurists, political leaders and community representatives, reflected on the life and enduring contributions of Dr. Masud in the fields of public service, higher education and social upliftment.

His role in founding and nurturing BGSBU as a beacon of learning and his lifelong commitment to the empowerment of tribal communities were widely acknowledged as defining aspects of his legacy.

Speakers resolved to carry forward Dr. Masud’s vision of education, equity and inclusive development and to translate his ideals into sustained action for the benefit of society at large.
