RAJOURI OCTOBER 19:--Within 24 hours of the sealing of seven Waqf shops by the officials of the Waqf Board for not clearing rents for decades, the allottees paid a part payment of the rent and assured to clear the liabilities within a month.
At the request of allottees, the Chairperson of Jammu & Kashmir Waqf Board and Minister of State, Dr. Darakhshan Andrabi on Thursday visited the Auqaf Market Lal Chowk Srinagar and after receiving cheques (a part of pending payments) from the allottees & ordered to open the shops.
On Wednesday evening, Dr. Darakhshan Andrabi along with officers of Waqf Board visited Auqaf Market Lal Chowk Srinagar and sealed seven shops as the allottees failed to deposit their outstanding rent amount despite many notices and warnings by the Waqf Board Chairperson .
After the Waqf Board action, the whole market remained closed and shopkeepers protested against the Waqf Board’s action.
But, Dr. Andrabi remained unmoved on the decision and said: “If the allottees don’t deposit the shop’s outstanding rent amount the shops would remain sealed”.
Dr. Andrabi claimed that even after the rent hike the properties at Lal book Chowk are rented out at a very marginal rate as compared to the rates in the business hub of Srinagar.
As the Waqf Board remains adamant on its decision, a deputation of the Auqaf Market traders met Dr. Andrabi in her office and offered her to accept a part of the outstanding payments today only and agreed to clear all remaining pending rent dues within a month. Agreeing to trader’s submission, Dr. Andrabi on Thursday evening visited the market, received the cheques from shopkeepers and ordered to un-seal their shops.
While addressing reporters, Dr. Darakhshan Andrabi said: “She was not against anyone utilizing Waqf property as per rules to earn his livelihood but she will not allow anybody to grab the finances or assets of the Waqf Board”.
All the allottees of Waqf Board properties were also informed in clear words that no more time concession would be given to any defaulters.
“Clear the pending amount of the rent and retain the properties or vacate them otherwise we will be sealing them and re-auctioning them,” said Dr. Andrabi.
