  • Russia plans to invest USD 14 bn in Pakistan’s energy sector

Russia plans to invest USD 14 bn in Pakistan’s energy sector

    (Press Trust of India)
Islamabad | Feb 07 :-Cash-strapped Pakistan is set to receive an integrated Russian investment package of USD 14 billion for the country’s energy sector, including offshore gas pipeline and underground storage projects, a media report said Thursday.

A Russian delegation headed by Gazprom Management Committee Deputy Chairman Vitaly A Markelov pledged to make the investment during a recent visit to Pakistan, the Express Tribune reported.

The Russian companies would build a gas pipeline from Karachi to Lahore to transport imported gas for meeting the needs of the Punjab province.
Out of the USD14 billion, Russians would invest around USD 10 billion in an offshore gas pipeline project, USD 2.5 billion in the North-South pipeline project and the remaining on building underground storages in Pakistan, the report said.
Pakistan and Russian state-run entities on Wednesday signed inter corporate agreement to conduct a feasibility study of the USD10-billion offshore pipeline project.
The planned massive Russian investment in Pakistan is coming at a time when bilateral relations between Moscow and Islamabad were warming up.
Pakistan’s ties with Russia have moved past the bitter Cold War hostilities and the chill in the US-Pakistan relations has further pushed the country towards Russia and China.
Under this project, Russian company, Gazprom, will conduct feasibility steady to build offshore pipeline from Iran to Pakistan, according to the report.

Pakistan’s Minister for Petroleum Division, Ghulam Sarwar Khan, appreciated the expanding trajectory of bilateral relations between Russia and Pakistan and welcomed Gazprom’s interest in off-shore gas pipeline project and termed it a manifestation of multifaceted cooperation between the two countries.
The pipeline construction is expected to be completed in three to four years.
Inter State Gas Systems (ISGS) Managing Director Mobin Saulat and Markelov signed the agreement.
Under the deal, Russia will export 500 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) to one billion cubic feet per day gas to meet the growing demand of gas following industrialisation under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.
A feasibility study would be conducted by Gazprom at its own cost with no financial implications on Pakistan.
Russia holds huge gas deposits in Iran and has offered Pakistan and India gas exports by laying an offshore pipeline that will pass through the strategic Gwadar Port on the Arabian sea.
Russia has been a big gas exporter to the European Union countries and Turkey since long and despite US anger, the European bloc has continued to make imports to meet its domestic needs.
Moscow receives gas from Turkmenistan and then exports it to EU states. It has got and managed gas deposits in Iran as well and is looking to gain foothold in the Pakistani market, the report said.
Certain economic benefits such as transit fee would accrue to Pakistan if the project is implemented, the report said.
Pakistan will import some 500 million to 1 billion cubic feet of gas from Russia daily, which would be transported through sea link, the agreement says.
The pipeline would follow an integrated approach including other ancillary projects such as underground gas storage, desalination and other power projects.
Moreover, the project would bring Pakistan on the world map as the transit country for offshore gas pipelines, the report said.

Romi Sharma, 42, a writer, artist and social worker, has become the brand ambassador for people in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) as her social media effort to reach out to displaced families of 1947 is gaining overwhelming support from people from both sides of the Line of Control.

A native of Poonch and presently in New Delhi, Romi took to uploading her stories and poems on the social media last year when one of her poems in Poonchi language found an earnest reader in PoJK who circulated it far and wide.

“It was only my love for language and connect with people of my region that made me upload a poem in Poonchi language on Facebook. It was read by some persons across the LoC and appreciations started pouring in my inbox,” Romi said, adding, “It became an instant hit among people in PoJK from Poonch origin”.

Khan Sharafat Arif Kakazai, a former staff officer of late Mohammad Abdul Qayyum Khan, Prime Minister of PoJK, who contacted her on social media, christened his daughter’s name after Romi. He wrote in Poonchi, “Maray ghara vich kuri paida hoi aj ma us na naam Roomi rakhya. Allah tusey ta tusain nay saray (A daughter is born in my family today whom I have named as Roomi after you. God bless you.)

Besides, a large number of people from Poonch scattered in PoJK have joined Romi’s community page on Facebook and are exchanging views and old rituals of people that used to be commonly shared before the Partition.

“So far, I have been successful in reuniting nine families in the Poonch region,” Romi said. The writer said that her endeavour was also inviting hate messages from fundamentalists. “My page and community link (Romi Sharma Poonchi-Apna Poonchi Parivaar) also carries some hate messages where people from the other side threatened me to stop and even called me a person from the Intelligence Bureau on some mission,” she added.

Romi said she was undeterred by such threats and had a strong support of people from both sides to carry on the work undertaken by her. “My only motto is to reunite families who were separated in 1947 irrespective of religion, caste or creed,” she said.

Highest institution of JK becoming a joke: PDP hits out at GovernorDon’t act as agent of any political political party, uphold sanctity of your post’

Srinagar Feb 7 2019S:-enior Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Mohammad Sartaj Madani has expressed serious concern over the remarks made by the Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik, terming it worrisome that the “highest institution of the state is now becoming a mere joke.”

Madni said that it is regrettable that since the day Governor Malik assumed office in the state, he goes to every TV channel and every newspaper and apparently without verifying facts, makes general comments.

“Governor’s post is constitutional and has its own dignity and it is expected from a governor that he or she performs impartially without fear and favour. However, what we are seeing in Jammu and Kashmir for the past few months is a clear bias shown by the Raj Bhavan,” said Madni, in a statement.
The PDP leader added that going by the previous statements of Governor Malik it seems that he is grudging the people of Kashmir even having a house and according to him anybody who is owning a two-storey house in Kashmir has to be a thief.
“The height is that now the Governor is making political statements and trying to lure people towards a particular political party. Such actions will lead the state towards an anarchy,” Madni said.
He maintained further the instead of interfering unnecessarily in politics, Governor Malik should concentrate on providing basic amenities to the people who at present have been left in lurch with dearth of water and electricity taking toll in entire Kashmir Valley. “If he keeps indulging himself in these theatrics, time is near when the credibility of this highest post will get eroded and the Raj Bhavan will become a joke for people of the state as well as of the country,” Madni said.
He added that it has been the prime agenda of the PDP that the muscular approach will not take the state anywhere as this has been tried for many decades and hasn’t yielded any positive outcome.
Madni that it is unfortunate that some people still believe in the efficacy of these methods and are trying to repeat the old mistakes which will be meaningless and will prove counter productive. “Instead of turning the entire state into a theatre of war, there is a need to shun the repressive methods being employed against the people of Kashmir with death and violence becoming rampant with each passing day,” Madni said.
The PDP leader added that in order to get the state out of the vicious cycle of violence, PDP has been demanding a comprehensive dialogue process with all stake holders including Hurriyat, Pakistan and militant leadership.
“It is must for the success of a result oriented dialogue that all the parties are invited on the table and a lasting solution to the decades old dispute is made possible. PDP was founded with this sole objective to make strenuous efforts for the Kashmir resolution and make peace permanent in the violence infested state,” said Madni.
